Manlio m
Italian: from the Latin name, Manlius, of a famous Roman family of staunch republican virtues and heroism. An earlier form of the name was Manilius. It appears to be a derivative of the old Roman given name Manius, which is probably derived either from māne morning or from the archaic root mān- good. Marcus Manlius Capitolinus (d. ?384 BC), who saved Rome from the besieging Gauls in 389 BC, is said to have defended plebeian debtors from their patrician creditors, and the following year to have been impeached and executed by being thrown from the Tarpeian Rock. The Italian form of the name was bestowed by Garibaldi on one of his sons.
